Are you an eCommerce email strategist + copywriter? Here are two reasons why you should know your email tech

There are a whopping 213 email marketing platforms listed on Trust Radius. Likely more that didn't make the list.

But so what? You're a copywriter and your focus is strategy, research, writing, and optimizing for conversion. Tech is not your problem. Or is it?

Here are two important reasons why knowing email tech is your business:

1. Know the possibilities:

Each email platform is different. Some have features that others don't.

Knowing distinct features could help you write copy or create sequences that your client can use as an advantage.

For example, if your client is using Klaviyo and they only have an abandoned checkout sequence, you can suggest that they do a separate abandoned cart sequence as well.

2. Know your limitations:

On the flip side, you want to make sure that your ideas match your client's email platform's functionality.

Imagine getting them all excited about doing XYZ email strategy, then finding out their email platform can't perform your suggestion after all.

For example, don't suggest testing optimal send times by staggering email sends if your client is using HubSpot.

How to learn

You don't need to get certifications or buy a course (unless you want to).

Pick 2-3 popular eCom email platforms—Klaviyo, Privy, and Mailchimp, for example. Create a free account for each and play around. Watch vids on YouTube. You know the drill.

The point is knowing what's possible or at least knowing what to look for and not assuming all platforms have the same functionality.

Be the knowledgeable partner that you are

Even though our job is all about strategy and copy, our clients look to us for some eCommerce-related knowledge beyond our expertise.

Having even just a basic knowledge of different platforms will not only help you do better work, your clients will also see you as a partner who knows their stuff.
